8 Miles and Climbing

I haven’t said anything about my half-marathon training in awhile.

The race is four weeks from today. Yesterday, Chewie and I ran eight miles. For those of you familiar where I live, we ran the Bridges Loop twice, with a jaunt down to Lions Park for two laps of the park.

The Bridges Loop is shown here:

My route is: Wheaton Way (starting around 18th or so) to the Warren Avenue Bridge, accessed via staircase; take a hard left off the bridge on 17th to Evergreen Park to Highland; up the hill to 11th Place; 11th Place to Washington Avenue which runs into the Manette Bridge; cross the Manette Bridge and then either do the loop again or head home. One loop is just about 3 miles. (Don’t worry, I use my Garmin Forerunner GPS watch to keep exact distances.)

The Lions Park (Lions Field on the map) spur I do is WNW of the Warren Avenue Bridge on Lebo Boulevard. There is a nice 2/3 mile pedestrian trail that I use to tack on whatever mileage I need to make a whole multiple of the Bridge Loop work.

I felt pretty good while running the 8 miles, but afterwords I felt pretty sore; much more sore than last Saturday when I ran seven.

Since starting the half-marathon training program on September 7, we’ve logged 102 miles of running. We have 63 more to go in the next three-and-a-half weeks, and then I will run the 13.1 mile race myself on November 30. (No dogs allowed, sorry Chewie.)

Now that daylight savings time has ended, it will be dark during my Monday and Wednesday runs. I can’t say I’m looking forward to that. I have a mesh vest with reflectors on it and a blinking light for Chewie, so as long as people aren’t texting, they should be able to avoid me on the few stretches without sidewalks on my routes. (We’re doomed…)

Sore? Buy new running shoes, the ones you have may be worn out (moose’s are heavy). In my guesstimation new shoes can cut back on ~30% of the soreness, not a total fix but worth the money.

My shoes are pretty new. They probably have about 80 miles on them.
All my soreness was gone on Sunday. It was probably just lactic acid burn since it set in so fast and left so fast.
